River song: Close your eyes, go with the flow

Nature has a voice, and it has something to say. Aboard a pair of kayaks, two scientists paddled the length of the mighty Murray River with their microphones to capture its story as a soundscape. In the latest edition of The Yarn podcast, Jordyn Beazley takes us along for the ride.

In this special edition of The Yarn, outgoing 2021 Citizen graduate cadet Jordyn Beazley reports on an epic project creating a soundscape of the Murray River.

When scientists from the Australian National University combine the sounds of nature with auditory renderings of data measuring its health, we can gain fresh, critical perspective on its history and future.

This audio feature was developed for Radio National’s Science Friction program, where it was originally produced and presented by Natasha Mitchell: link here.  It was supported by a fellowship grant awarded by the Science Journalists Association of Australia.

The Yarn is produced at the Centre for Advancing Journalism, at the University of Melbourne.
